Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson, as well as Greg Popovich and Tim Duncan, were two of the most famous player-coach combinations in NBA history. However, not all players and coaches can work out their differences while remaining on the same team, as was the case with Deron Williams and his former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.
Williams and Sloan collaborated for six seasons, but the two men couldn’t seem to get along, and their relationship ended in a widely publicized breakup. However, the former point guard recently discussed his difficult relationship with Sloan, admitting that it was really tense.
During his first six NBA seasons, Deron Williams was coached by Jerry Sloan.
Jerry Sloan was already a legend when Deron Williams was selected third overall in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. In 1988-89, he became the Jazz’s head coach, and the Hall of Famer — who died in 2020 — guided them to two NBA Finals appearances in the 1990s.
William didn’t play as much as he would have wanted in his first season with the coach, averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 assists in 28.8 minutes. He became one of the greatest point guards in the NBA during his second season.
Williams averaged 19.2 points and 10.5 assists over the following four seasons after averaging 16.2 points and 9.3 assists in 2006-07. Between 2006-07 and 2009-10, he was selected to two of his three All-Star teams and led Utah to four consecutive postseason berths. In 2007, the Jazz even advanced to the Western Conference Finals.
During the 2010-11 season, though, Williams and Sloan’s relationship was reportedly strained, according to the New York Post. Sloan subsequently resigned from his role as head coach in February 2011. The Jazz traded Williams to the New Jersey Nets a few days later.
Sloan’s connection with the former All-NBA selection, according to Yahoo, may have played a factor in his decision to step down. How does Williams, on the other hand, feel about their relationship?

Williams recently featured on Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s show All The Smoke, where he discussed his connection with Sloan.
On the Oct. 14 show, he stated, “Our friendship was obviously strained at the end.” “I believe I clung to my first year, not starting and… how he didn’t really play me, but would throw me in for a couple of minutes here and there….” When I was younger, I believe I took it personally and harbored a grudge against him. So I believe that had an impact on me.”
Williams did acknowledge, though, that he was sometimes incorrect.
Williams said, “I was certainly a bit s*** at times, a little prima donna.” “I also knew how coach Sloan was, and I’m quite sure I’d poke the bear just to see how he reacted.” It was a back-and-forth situation; s*** that I would never do today, knowing what I know now. But I’ve always admired and admired Coach Sloan, and I’ve learned a lot from him. My finest years were unquestionably spent in Utah. As a coach and a person, I have a lot of admiration and respect for him.”
Years later, Deron Williams talked with his old Utah Jazz coach.

Williams, who retired from the NBA after the 2016-17 season, claimed he visited with Sloan a few years ago before his death. According to the New York Post, he died as a result of complications from Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
On All The Smoke, Williams stated, “I always felt I wanted to reach out and apologize.” “… He was clearly regressing in several ways. And our discussions became hot a number of times, or rather, he got angry a couple of times. It was almost as if he was transported back to the time when I had irritated him. But I was glad I had the opportunity to speak with him before he died away and apologize for being a jerk.”
Williams and Sloan enjoyed a lot of success together, making several playoff runs and coming within one series victory of reaching the NBA Finals. But we’ll never know how much better they might have been if their relationship hadn’t soured.
