Gamigo, the publisher of ArcheAge in the west is losing its license for publishing and service operation. Kakao Games will be replacing them starting from September 2018. Kakao has a strong history with MMOs such as producing Black Desert Online (BDO) and Lineage 2: Revolution (L2R). While Gamigo focused on casual mobile games like Candy Crush Saga or Bubble Witch 3 Saga, it’s hard to imagine that they could compete against these two juggernauts.
Gamigo has announced that they will be taking over publishing ArcheAge in the west from Kakao. The game is a MMORPG and it’s been in development for a while now.
It’s the end of an era: ArcheAge is receiving a new publisher in the West. Kakao will take over the game in Europe, North America, and Oceania for developer XL Games in December, thus displacing Gamigo.
Gamigo has been publishing the game since 2018, when it bought the assets of Trion Worlds, which had been running it since the game’s inception in 2014. Kakao’s selection isn’t surprising; the company has previously acted as the western publisher for a number of South Korean games, including Elyon and Black Desert, though Pearl Abyss has since restarted its own publication of the latter.
Kakao sent out a short statement explaining the game’s concept and future Korean and Western editions, using the slogan “One Global Build – Two Versions.”
“Our build will be upgraded to the most recent version of the game and will get new content at the same time throughout the globe.” This will enable us, among other things, to listen to and send your input to developers more quickly than before. While we cannot guarantee that every recommendation and idea will be adopted, you will now have a much stronger voice in the ArcheAge community. The two distinct versions will continue to exist. Though both versions will see significant modifications, one of our key aims is to give the ArcheAge: Unchained experience that gamers have been clamoring for since the game’s inception.”
Gamigo has also posted a statement wishing gamers well and promising them that their accounts would be moved.
“It is with great sadness that we announce today, after seven years of ArcheAge and two years of ArcheAge: Unchained, that the franchise will be transferred to a new publisher in December. gamigo games and its connected subsidiaries will no longer be in control of or engaged with any live ArcheAge and ArcheAge: Unchained operations. All rights and responsibilities will be handled completely by the new publisher Kakao Games. But don’t worry, all of your belongings will be moved! And anything you buy while our stores are open will be transferred, along with all of your characters. We understand that the news has left you with many unanswered questions. We’ll respond to all of them to the best of our ability.”

The “worst mmo ever” is a game that is being taken over by Kakao. The company has been publishing the game in the west for some time now, but it looks like Gamigo will be exiting the game altogether.
