Manchester City and Real Madrid are battling for the signature of Kylian Mbappe, with both teams willing to break the world record transfer fee. The Premier League champions will offer a staggering £200 million, while Los Blancos have offered €300m (£264m).
The man city transfer news is a rumor that suggests that Real Madrid are planning to get Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester City are also rumored to be in the market for a striker because of Sergio Aguero’s injury.
When the summer window shuts for 2021 on Tuesday, Aug. 31 (11 p.m. BST / 6 p.m. ET), all the major clubs are rushing to plug holes in their squads, find new teams for peripheral players (either permanently or on loan), or work out the financials to make a late large deal.
Manchester United has already signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and now Cristiano Ronaldo, while most other clubs, including Manchester City (Jack Grealish), Chelsea (Romelu Lukaku), Arsenal (Ben White), Barcelona (Sergio Aguero), Real Madrid (David Alaba), Bayern Munich (Dayot Upamecano), and, of course, Pari, have made at least one major signing (Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi.)
For the time being, Tottenham striker Harry Kane is staying, putting an end to one drama, but can PSG star Kylian Mbappe secure a €180 million transfer to Real Madrid before the window closes? What additional business do the big teams have to take care of before they’re stuck with their current lineup until January?
ESPN’s reporters and writers break down what might happen in the next several hours.

Arsenal have a plethora of players available at the right price, including Hector Bellerin, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and Sead Kolasinac, but they have left themselves with much too much work to do in terms of moving individuals out and bringing in suitable replacements. Their poor start to the season and urgent need for reinforcements indicate a hectic last few days ahead, with the possibility of errors.
Mikel Arteta and the club’s finance staff are faced with a major decision regarding forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Lacazette’s contract expires in June 2022, and despite manager Mikel Arteta’s assurances that he would remain, insiders claim the Gunners may be willing to sell their most experienced goal-scorer Aubameyang to free up money for late additions.
If that happens, another striker will be required, since Eddie Nketiah may be loaned out. — Crystal Palace are interested in both Bellerin and winger Reiss Nelson, but a deal seems improbable, and a right-back will be required if Bellerin is granted his desire to go. The European champions have already addressed their most glaring flaw by acquiring Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku for €115 million, but they are still looking to improve their centre-back alternatives. Jules Kounde of Sevilla remains their favorite candidate, but the Spanish club is demanding closer to €65 million to conclude a deal, having earlier said that they would take €50 million plus add-ons. This may make a deal less probable, although Chelsea still has time following Kurt Zouma’s £25 million transfer to West Ham.
Tiemoue Bakayoko has returned to AC Milan on loan, with a loan deal for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez being considered as he wants to leave LaLiga’s reigning champions. Chelsea have Danny Drinkwater, Ross Barkley, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on their books and may sell them if they can, while winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is allegedly in discussions with Dortmund over a loan transfer. Jurgen Klopp’s team has no significant gaps to fill, so the focus has been on finalizing new contracts for Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino in recent weeks.
Liverpool have been without one of their most consistent performers in recent seasons since Georginio Wijnaldum’s summer departure to PSG. A decision to replace him could be made, with Brighton’s Yves Bissouma being linked, but for now, Klopp is content to rely on Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, and Curtis Jones to fill the void.
For the proper price, Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita may all be available. Aston Villa are also interested in signing Curtis Jones on a permanent basis (for approximately £15 million), giving Klopp even another choice to make. Liverpool, on the other hand, are unlikely to make major changes in terms of large newcomers. Liverpool believes their team is capable of competing on all fronts, therefore a calm final day of the window is the most probable result. Ogden, Utah

Pep Guardiola claims to be satisfied with his team, but with Sergio Aguero’s departure to Barcelona, there is obviously a need for a striker. City have never hidden their desire to acquire England captain Harry Kane, but that is no longer a possibility given that the England captain has committed his immediate future to Tottenham.
Spurs bluntly refused to bargain over Kane, according to ESPN, and it’s worth remembering that City has before walked away from a negotiation table and waited a year to strengthen, as they did with Ruben Dias in 2020.

Without Kane, City’s chances of signing a striker before the deadline are slim. Of course, options will be considered, but time is running short, and City isn’t known for panicking. With a mostly identical team — Aguero has gone; Grealish has arrived — they won the league and advanced to the Champions League final, and they will back themselves to do it again. Manchester United’s summer budget was spent on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had to find money elsewhere to ensure they were ready to sign Cristiano Ronaldo when the opportunity arose. As a result, it’s doubtful they’ll make any more deals on deadline day, but a club like United would never turn down a chance. Take a peek at Cristiano Ronaldo.

Dan James may join Leeds United on a permanent or loan basis, with Brighton also interested, and there’s always the possibility that someone could make an offer for Diogo Dalot or Jesse Lingard, but it seems like both will remain at Old Trafford. The summer’s longest transfer drama seems to be resolved, with Kane confirming his decision to remain at Tottenham despite Manchester City’s interest. Spurs demanded £150 million for the England captain, but City refused to make a bid because there was no space for bargaining.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is known for doing things at the last minute, and the club is still interested in Wolves winger Adama Traore. Meanwhile, they’re still searching for alternatives in the centre-back and right-back positions, with connections to Barcelona’s Emerson, Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, and Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu (the Spanish side rejected one bid from Spurs this weekend).
In midfield, Barcelona’s Ilaix Moriba, Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, and Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez may be possibilities, with the club willing to allow Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier go.
Spurs have already finalized a contract to sign Pape Matar Sarr, but the midfielder will be loaned back to Metz for the remainder of the season. Olley says:

Given their fragile resources and a quality team that recently won LaLiga ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona, this was never going to be a busy transfer window for Atletico. Rodrigo de Paul already seems to be a smart addition who will provide much-needed innovation to the team.
The last remaining item of business was to sign a forward to provide depth to the front line, and Hertha Berlin’s Matheus Cunha is that €30 million signing. Cunha’s adaptation to Atletico will be fascinating to watch, as Simeone’s track record in molding brilliant creative players to fit his rigorous system and demanding style is uneven to say the least.
Saul Niguez, a midfielder who has attracted attention from Man United and Chelsea in the Premier League but has yet to receive an offer, may be one of the biggest departures. Barca would still want to add a new midfielder, another attacker, a backup for left-back Jordi Alba, and perhaps a new centre-back. However, the budgetary truth is that additional additions this summer are improbable, if not impossible.
Coach Ronald Koeman would prioritize the arrival of another striker if money appeared out of nowhere, according to ESPN sources. Despite the additions of Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero (who is out for two months due to injury), Koeman believes there is still work to be done to match Lionel Messi’s production, which was the best in LaLiga last season with 30 goals.
However, the most important goal for Barca on the last day is to reduce the salary bill, since Messi’s departure hasn’t solved all of the club’s financial difficulties. Miralem Pjanic, who has offers to return to Italy, is one major earner they anticipate to go, but Samuel Umtiti has rejected all of the offers he’s had this summer, much to Barca’s displeasure. He’ll continue to be the club’s sixth-choice center-back.
Alex Collado, a youngster, will also be allowed to go, and president Joan Laporta has said that they would consider bids for the majority of their players. However, given the absence of solid interest in Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho, and Ousmane Dembele at this point of the window, there are unlikely to be any significant transfer payments coming in to help the club’s financial situation. However, Ilaix Moriba is likely to join RB Leipzig for about €20 million, while Tottenham may make a better offer for right-back Emerson Royal after their initial offer was turned down. Bayern Munich’s most pressing needs are at center-back and in midfield. They need Lucas Hernandez to get back in shape so he can join newcomer Upamecano, but they’re running out of time to replace David Alaba before the window shuts, and Matthias Ginter of Borussia Monchengladbach is a potential possibility.
With Marcel Sabitzer’s arrival from RB Leipzig, they’ve at least addressed a comparable need in midfield. They anticipate Corentin Tolisso to depart before the deadline, and Sabitzer, the Austrian international who excelled at Leipzig under Bayern’s new manager Julian Nagelsmann, will provide a solid third option with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. A rumored transfer for Gladbach’s Jonas Hofmann has allegedly fallen through and will not take place presently.
The most important choice Bayern must make is what to do with Robert Lewandowski’s contract, which will not be resolved on deadline day. It is set to expire in two years, but reports that the Poland international is looking for “a fresh challenge” may prompt Bayern to sell or extend the 33-year-current old’s contract. PSG has made a few bids for the striker in recent days, but Bayern has refused to trade. However, discussions with Lewandowski and his agent, Pini Zahavi, may begin throughout the season in order to retain him at the club for a little longer. Laurens, Julien

Dortmund’s most pressing requirement, based on their performances so far this season under Marco Rose, is a defense! Axel Witsel, the Belgium international midfielder who is filling in at the back, hasn’t done a very good job so far, and the club is trying hard to bolster the team in these areas. Marin Pongracic, a Wolfsburg centre-back, is expected to come on a loan with the option to purchase, while Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot may also join on loan.
Despite possessing a plethora of wingers, Dortmund needs a wide man to replace Sancho. Dortmund are keen in Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, and a loan move may be completed by Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Thomas Delaney’s departure to Sevilla means Dortmund are in need of a central midfielder, with Eduardo Camavinga one of the targets, but time is running out for the French prodigy.
Erling Haaland will remain for one more season before departing for €75 million next summer, unless PSG does something insane (and don’t rule it out in this transfer window of all transfer windows). Otherwise, the club will wait until January to evaluate whether it is necessary to restructure their roster and make further transfers. Laurens –

PSG has had a fantastic window, but could that change if Kylian Mbappe leaves? Despite the fact that the 22-year-old star’s contract expires in 12 months, PSG stood strong when €180 million was offered. PSG will likely pursue Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski, Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, or Everton’s Richarlison if Mbappe leaves, according to ESPN sources.
Camavinga, a highly regarded Rennes midfielder with only one year remaining on his contract and a €30 million price tag, is also eager to join the club. Mauricio Pochettino and Leonardo, the club’s sports director, are big fans of him, but he’ll only join if PSG create room in the team first.
PSG’s most pressing need right now is to reduce their roster. They had hoped to earn about €180 million through player departures before the summer, but have failed to find homes for peripheral players like Pablo Sarabia, Thilo Kehrer, and Layvin Kurzawa. Laurens –

Since the summer of 2019, Real Madrid has not paid a transfer fee to add to their first-team roster. Part of it has been about adjusting to the new financial reality brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic; part of it has been about acknowledging that they can no longer compete on an equal footing with the likes of PSG and Manchester City; and part of it has been about saving up for president Florentino Perez’s first-choice, dream signing: Mbappe.
Madrid’s financial discipline has allowed them to make a €180 million bid for Mbappe, but why they aren’t waiting until next summer when he is available for free is a mystery, particularly given that talks seem to have come to a halt after conversations before the weekend.
Casemiro, Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, Federico Valverde, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez, and Nacho Fernandez have all signed new contracts, but just one new signing is expected this summer. In a nutshell, it’s Mbappe or bust. Kirkland’s comment
