This is the second article in our series on platform games. Platformers are a genre of video game that typically involve jumping between fixed locations or platforms, often in order to reach the exit of each level.

The best platform games are a genre that is becoming increasingly popular. These games are typically fast-paced and require quick reflexes. They also tend to have lots of levels, which can be quite addicting.

The greatest platform games ever created, both 2D and 3D, are chosen by readers, and include classics like Guacamelee and Yoshi’s Island.

Reader Bernardo proposed the topic for this week’s Hot Topic, asking whether you like the platform genre in general and if you’re pleased with how it’s developed over time.

Although there was an effort to avoid answering with a Mario game, the results were unexpectedly unanimous, with Rayman Legends emerging as the obvious winner.

The King of Platformers In my view, the greatest platformers were and continue to be the Prince Of Persia titles, which range from the original and superb 2D side-scrollers on PC to the series’ apex with The Two Thrones and Warrior Within.

Graphics, level design, parkour, and fighting were always miles ahead of the competition at the time. They lost their way after that and were eventually supplanted by Assassin’s Creed’s open world concept, but those early games remain unrivaled in my opinion. Russell

Platformvania Games are one of my favorite genres, and my all-time favorites in the 3D realm are Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and Super Mario 3D World. But instead of discussing them, of which I’m sure most people are aware of the genius, I’m going to discuss the 2D Metroidvania games Guacamelee 1 and 2.

Even though they are Metroidvanias, where combo-based fighting is a big element of the game, I recall that platforming was just as important. Perhaps even more so than in other Metroidvanias, since there were a lot of combat maneuvers that also helped with platforming. There were parts of the game when you were solely responsible for platforming. Although some of the parts were challenging, I had a great time playing it.

Rayman Origins and Legends, on the other hand, is a pure 2D platformer. It featured a fantastic visual design and unforgettable stages where you were pursued to licensed music tracks; playing such levels was a lot of fun. Gameplay in the old school Psychonauts 2 is a game that I just finished. I had never played the first game, but number two has quickly become my favorite platformer.

It includes several various gaming elements throughout its narrative, in the finest Nintendo style heritage. The game is strange in a nice manner, and the colors and brightness that flow throughout it are fantastic. SuperiorDom is a domain name created by SuperiorDom (gamertag)

Playing at all times Because platformers are my favorite genre, I’m not sure which one is the greatest. I sometimes like playing an old NES game, which, if I’m being honest, isn’t very good, but which I enjoy nevertheless, such as the NES Star Wars game, The Jetsons, and the NES version of Joe & Mac – which I prefer to the SNES version.

I’ve played every Mario platformer, both 2D and 3D, and I’d say they’ve been the greatest in the genre from the beginning and have been there ever since. This may be controversial, but I had so much fun with New Super Mario Bros. U that I think it’s my favorite of the 2D Mario games. I completed it 100 percent and really loved collecting some of the tougher gold coins.

I believe it was simply fortunate timing since I saw the commercial on TV and wanted to play a 2D Mario, so the following day I purchased a Wii U with Mario Bros. U and it was just what I needed: good old 2D Mario. I just completed Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World on my Nintendo Switch, and they are both fantastic games.

So, I’m not sure, but I’d say it needs to be a Mario game, whether 2D or 3D. It all depends on my mood, but I believe the 2D games win out since there’s no fluff and just continuous gameplay.

A little shout out to The Adventures Of Shuggy on Xbox 360, which I discussed on here years ago. It seems like a Sky TV game, but each level has a different concept, and it was a lot of fun. It’s too bad I’ve never met or heard of anybody else who’s played it. McFly1888

Mario vs. the rest of the world While it’s simple to pick a top Mario game and call it a day (which is exactly what I’m going to do), the top position for platformers is a bit of a moving target for me. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the original Super Mario Galaxy. Don’t get me wrong: it’s still fantastic, but there are certain sections that can be tedious. Some of the purple coin hunts, AI races, and expert levels like rolling on a ball and blowing Mario in a bubble seem a little too hard for me. A 9 out of 10 rating. Sorry.

Even though you have to battle the camera (which is particularly unpleasant during Wet Dry World), I still think Super Mario 64 is a great game. Super Mario Odyssey, on the other hand, has exceeded it. However, I’m not sure whether it’s superior than Galaxy 2. I didn’t get very far into it, but I never felt like I was dragging my feet. I believe I got as far as riding Yoshi up a brilliantly colored slide or down a waterfall?

As a result, Super Mario Odyssey is the greatest platform game available right now. Until I can properly compare it to Super Mario Galaxy 2, that is. Which is the better option? I’m not sure.

I’m curious as to what the most popular non-Mario response will be. Is there a Super Meat Boy? Rayman? Is it the Prince? Lara? Nate? Even Sonic? Though, after playing a top-tier Mario game, it’s difficult to argue that he isn’t the greatest. I would have guessed. DMR

Platformers with a history Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and the new Super Mario 3D World are my favorite platform games, which I know will be a popular response.

However, I’d want to give a big shout out to both Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, which were PlayStation 3/4 games, in the hopes of encouraging people to play them. I purchased Origins entirely because of GC’s review (thank you!) at the time. and the game’s gameplay, soundtrack, colors, levels, and general pleasure are on par with Mario games.

The same can be said about Legends and the music portions, particularly Black Betty. I know Ubisoft isn’t planning to produce another right now, which is a pity since it’s a 100% buy from day one. Do your thing, inbox magic! Lizardpudlian

Releases in several formats I’ve liked a number of Mega Drive platformer games due of the excellent design work that went into them, which had amazing visuals for a 16-bit system and were very playable. Coolspot, Fantastic Dizzy, Dynamite Heady, X-Men, Flashback, Tailspin, Bubsy Bobcat, Tiny Toon Adventures, Rolo To The Rescue, RoboCop Vs. Terminator, Rolling Thunder 2, ToeJam & Earl 1 and 2, Castle, and World Of Illusion are the titles in question. The Sonic games are also worth mentioning.

On subsequent platforms, some, but not all, of these games received a fresh title, although the sequels did not. Given that several of the games listed above have yet to get a newer title, I’d be thrilled to see this happen.

Pandemonium, Crash Bandicoot, Trash It, Croc, Spyro The Dragon, Rayman, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, and Ape Escape are just a few of the best 2D and 3D platform games I’ve ever played on the PlayStation. Rayman has newer games, Spyro’s trilogy was just remastered, and Crash Bandicoot demonstrates that these games are still loved two generations after their initial release.

Finally, ToeJam & Earl: Back In The Groove is the only 3D platform game I’ve liked on the Xbox One. It is the most recent installment and is also a platformer series that first debuted on the Sega Mega Drive. It’s come a long way, and I’m glad to see that it’s now available on the Xbox One, as well as other platforms.

These are my favorite platform games, which I’ve played for many generations, and I’m hoping that the next generation will not just relaunch some of these classics. In the not-too-distant future, I’ll be eagerly anticipating the arrival of new platformers, whether 3D or 2D. Be rotting, gaz (gamertag)

More about gaming

Yoshi’s victory Many of the most outstanding indie games, such as Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, and Celeste, utilize the 2D side view perspective to showcase their very well-developed gameplay. These utilize the past as a sentimental starting point, but they definitely develop it for a contemporary audience, taking use of all the latest smart technology and methods available.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island for the Super Nintendo was, in my opinion, a technological leap at the time. It was also one of Nintendo’s last big SNES releases. The lighting, colors used, sounds/music, and more sophisticated effects from the Super FX2 graphics processor were all skillfully incorporated to create a really unique game.

There was never a boring moment in the game’s 48 levels, and the gameplay was unique in almost every aspect, implying that the backdrops and foregrounds seemed to be alive and moving, and played a part in the gaming mechanics. Yoshi may also transform into a submarine, train, or aircraft, providing more subtle and dynamic action in addition to the basic yet diverse 2D platform jumping approach.

Yoshi’s Island looks like something out of a kid’s sketch book, but from the mind of a creative genius, while the earlier Marios were blocky, straight edged, and more simple to look at.

The bosses were all extremely distinct and creative, and the way you battled them was also very smart and original, including battles against giant tentacled Piranha plants, a monster on a very round moon in the sky, and within a frog’s intestines after being eaten when you were downsized! Not to mention the final fight against Baby Bowser.

Some of the main bosses’ theme music, I recall, was inspired by a particular Thrash Metal band named Slayer, with their title track from the album ‘Hell Awaits’ (subtly) being utilized for the boss fights. The soundtrack for the game’s last and major boss needs to be heard to be believed – it’s incredible.

Super Mario World 2 was, in my view, a template for future creators who are now working their magic. Obviously, there were other inspirational titles, but I believe that this Super Mario game broke new ground and inspired the wonderful contemporary Indie games that we see today. Alucard
